Next Tuesday, Alabama Democrats will have their first shot at a statewide win in more than a decade, when former US attorney Doug Jones faces off against accused pedophile Roy Moore in a special election to fill Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat.
But Jones is hardly a shoe-in. He’ll need African Americans — who make up more than 1 in four of the state’s registered voters — to turn out en masse.
